Support office in Fiji
The British Army Support Officer (BASO), is based at the British High Commission in Suva. He is responsible for British Army welfare and compassionate issues for nationals of Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. The BASO is the focal point for the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC) for the British Royal Navy, Army, and Royal Air Force). The BASO is supported by the British Army Support Assistant (BASA) who acts as his deputy during his absence.
Together, BASO and BASA verify compassionate circumstances on behalf of the JCCC. They are also required to verify the relationship of the relative to the service person, and confirm their illness through communication with hospitals, doctors etc. and informing the JCCC.
The BASO is responsible for resolving, where practicable and manageable general welfare enquiries relating to serving soldiers and their dependants.
Examples are:
- assisting the return to duty of Fijian personnel who have lost travel documents or passports
- acting as a focus for soldiers who are absent without leave in Fiji
- act as a focal point for soldiers appearing in civilian courts in Fiji (subject to approval from the Ministry of Defense).
The BASO is the point of contact for all bereaved families, acting as the Casualty Notifying Officer (CNO) and Visiting Officer (VO).
